Over time, Minsk is becoming more and more similar to other European capitals. Maybe not in everything, but definitely in the number of bicycles. According to the latest estimates, more than 300 thousand cyclists will go to the streets of Minsk this season. A specialized organization has been created to protect their interests.
But the only problem is that there are more cyclists, but the problems remain. Despite the fact that Minsk is potentially very convenient for cycling, the conditions that exist today are not very conducive to avid cyclists. There are problems both for those who like to simply ride and for athletes, as evidenced by the recent mass accident on the ring road. There are not enough paths, parking lots, too many high curbs ...
And in order to jointly overcome these problems, the Minsk Cycling Society was created - an organization that aims to develop and expand cycling in Minsk and the Minsk region. The society is registered, and now cyclists have the first official organization to defend their interests.
The main goals of the organization are simple and clear to everyone who chooses a two-wheeled friend as a vehicle. Members of the organization strive to:
- when planning urban infrastructure, the interests of cyclists were taken into account;
- cyclists were relieved of the need to climb high curbs;
- bike lanes and lanes have become commonplace in the capital.
Also, of course, the organization will cooperate with cycling clubs in other countries, exchange experience in creating cycling infrastructure. And not just cooperate, but is going to become an active participant in the European Cycling Federation program. The plans also include the development of cycling tourism, one of the first steps in this direction will be the creation of the Belarusian part of the EuroVelo EV2 route - the route that runs from the Irish city of Galway to Moscow. But the most important thing is that society is going to make sure that our bicycle takes its place of honor among other vehicles and is not perceived, as now, as a pariah among the elite with internal combustion engines.
